A brief guide about Luggage and Saddlebag

Touring bike mostly comes with a hard luggage. It is a build in luggage and it can either be permanently affixed to the bike or removable. If it is a removable, then you can take it into a hotel room when you stop for the night. But if you do not have a touring motorcycle that comes with a luggage, you may need to consider of buying an add-on luggage to your bike.

Luggage can be divided into two types: Hard and Soft.

Hard Luggage

There are lots of companies that make hard luggage (mainly saddlebags) for a variety of motorcycles. Adding hard luggage to your machine can be costly, but the quality of luggage you will get is assured and it will surely fit your bikes. Many times, the luggage fits so well that the motorcycle looks like it came with the hard luggage.

In addition to saddlebags, you also have the option to install a top box to the back of your motorcycle and gives you room to carry more item. Top box is usually quite big in space. You can actually fit one or even two full-face helmet in it.

Soft Luggage

Sometimes, you might thing placing a hard luggage (a hard saddlebag or Top box) makes your bike un-cool. You are right, especially when you place a hard luggage on a sports bike. (It is possible to put a hard luggage on your sport bike. But don’t do it, it looks horrible. Side is okay but not on top of your back sit.)

Beside of un-coolness, you may not have the extra cash to place a hard luggage. Soft luggage made of leather or a synthetic material is the way to go.

Soft luggage, for example a soft saddlebag is much cheaper and attaching the saddlebag to the bike is simple. Soft saddlebags come in a variety of sizes to fit just nice for your motorcycle. Furthermore, they usually come with rain covers to protect your bags from getting soaked in wetness.

One thing you need to be aware of when you buy a soft saddlebag is making sure it is tight down firmly to your bikes. Why? Floppy bags might have a chance to get caught in your rear wheel (causing you to flip).Besides; floppy bags may also reach your exhaust and get burned.

Beside soft saddlebags, you have the option to choose other soft luggage like duffle bags, motorcycle backpacks and courier bags.

Duffle bags are specially designed to strap onto the rear seat of your motorcycle.

Motorcycle backpacks are made specifically for motorcyclists. They usually come with a padding where the pack meets your back and crossed straps. Your motorcycle backpacks will stay secure while you are riding down the road at 100km/h. Do not put too much stuff on the backpack as you might fill uncomfortable and annoying.

A courier bag can be handy if you are shopping for a few items in a grocery store. But do remember that it is not design for long trips. (Do not have the appropriate straps to hang on to your bike)
